Understanding & Easing Big Feelings
This tailored workshop is designed to help children on the autism spectrum better understand, communicate, and positively manage their emotions and sensory state.
Using a simple, visual scaling system with four color-coded zones, we provide a clear and engaging way for children to identify how they are feeling.
Through interactive discussions and activities, children pinpoint the situations, environments, or experiences that move them between zones.
Having identified their own unique emotional triggers, we teach them effective sensory-based calming techniques to help them self-regulate and return to the Green Zone when emotions become overwhelming.
The workshop helps children build confidence in understanding their emotions, fostering a more positive and manageable experience in their day-to-day lives.
Workshop Benefits
Provides children with a practical framework for recognizing and managing their emotions.
Empowers them to communicate their feelings in a way that is simple and non-verbal if needed.
Equips them with lifelong tools for emotional self-regulation.
Creates a sense of predictability and safety through daily visualization practice.
The workshop ends with a soothing, child-friendly guided visualization designed to help children become calm and find their safe space.
The visualisation draws together the three key techniques which I have found to be the most effective in working one-to-one with autistic children in my private practice.
Teachers will receive a recording of the guided visualization to play each morning in the classroom.
Research shows that consistent practice over time helps lower anxiety thresholds and broaden childrens’ windows of tolerance, equipping them with the resilience to navigate challenges with greater ease and calm.
